May 23 ~ Dr. Tom Milam He Leadeth Me Devotional

“Confidence, Our Haven of Rest”
Psalm 138; Acts 27:8

“In my hand, no price I bring, simply to the cross I cling; On solid rock, I’ll take my stand, because all other ground is sinking sand.” Are you experiencing the same divine confidence the Psalmist did? We have no grace of our own to make anything perfect; Our faith wavers and is ever unsteady - not like God’s though, His will not stagger and surely will not fall. It is God’s love that will never grow cold and indifferent. Ours must be warmed by Him, as the closer we draw to Him; We can’t even resolve with the firmness of a potato skin - my friends, we need God - on none other can we depend. We must be grounded in the rock and this Rock won’t roll; it is the Rock of Ages - Our bedrock confidence. If we stand and operate in our own thinking and abilities, that same Rock will fall on us, and grind us to powder. Our ruin will be sadness, sorrow and confusion. What is common and natural seems to be so faithful to us but will entrap us with fleshly confusion to take us down to scream upward, “O God! Had I sought wisdom.” We must abide and rest in the work of the Lord, not on what we can do, and then invite Him to rest on our decisions. It is God who started this work in us, and it is God who will finish it. He said His work is complete, ours yet falters; He will perfect His work in us, but our flesh will be imperfect until redemption day. We can’t rely on our weak, earthly confidence, in what we have done, but our dependence is on what God will do. Unbelief says, we will never rest in the fair haven of His mercy, and that is true, if we try to stand in our own strength. Our confidence must be in Christ alone, who pleads our case before His Father, day and night.

Weekly Memory Verses:  1 Peter 2:1-5

1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

3  If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

4  ¶To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

5  Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
